Athletics Day

Jordy, Caleb.Y, Mitchell and Jaeger competing in the 60m final.
On the 13th of November it was a scorching hot day, Waimea Intermediate had their legendary Athletics Day.
Room 2 had a lot of successes. Tori, Madi, Jordy, Caleb Y and Mitchell were all in the track finals. A big congratulations to our very own Jaeger who won the 60 meter track event. Even though some of us didn’t make it into grandstand we all tried our hardest just like our relay team that came 4th. All in all, we were all happy about our performances. The whole of room 2 felt like winners by home time.

Our letter to the Waimea Weekly

W.I.S. students make a difference
Today, students from Room 2, Waimea Intermediate went to the Richmond Mall at lunch time, to raise awareness and gather donations to help fight child labour. They had been studying children’s rights in class this term, and noticed that children involved in child labour are having their rights taken away from them. Children in child labour have no chance of an education, they are beaten and forced to work in factories often to pay off their families’ debts. Everyday a lot of children’s lives are at risk because of the harmful and dangerous jobs they have to do. Just recently, they read about a fireworks factory explosion in India, which killed lots of children working there. In order to stop this happening again, Room 2 decided to take action and try to help those 250 million kids involved in child labour. They made wallets from juice boxes, and sold them for $3 as well as having a coin trail for donations. They raised $176 and they will donate it to www.freethechildren.org which is a website started by a 12-year-old boy who also wanted to break the cycle of child labour. Room 2 students would like to thank all of the people who donated.

Juice Boxes Needed

We need as many of these juice boxes as we can get our hands on!! We will turn these juice boxes into something amazing that we can then sell to people. All the profits will go to help prevent children from working in dangerous and hazardous conditions, something they call Child Labour.

We can make a difference with recycling these boxes.

Bring then to class Monday!!!

Social Action for Child Labour

We have learnt about our rights, and how some children are not having their rights met, like the 250 million children involved in child labour. We know how they get involved in child labour, not by choice but because there in no other option. Now we are planning to put our knowledge into action.

We want to think of a way we can help these poor children. It could be a way to educate people and spread the word, it could be encouraging people to buy free trade products, or fundraising some money to help them. We need your ideas to work out the best way we can MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!

Write down some fantastic ideas that we could use, but be realistic!!

These websites could help:

Child Labour Poems

We wrote poems about child labour, trying to use emotive language to make people realise how hard, dangerous and sad childrens lives can be when they are involved in child labour.

Here are a few examples, let us know what you thought as you read it.

Emotive Language for Child Labour

We wrote sentences that would make people feel sorry for children working in child labour. Then we tried to find an image that matched what we were trying to say.

Paper Bag Simulation

Today we had our second experience of being children involved in child labour. We had to make as many paper bags as we could within 10 minutes. If our bags were not made correctly we would have been beaten, we had to make 10 bags if we wanted a meal that night. It was a scary experience as we were worried about being beaten as we made them (even though we knew this would not REALLY happen to us, but it does for them) and no one was able to make 10, the closest was Tori with 7.

Image if this was real. How would you feel doing this every day, from 4am to 8pm and only making$1.25?

Water Simulation

Today we experienced what it would be like to collect and carry our own water. We carried our buckets full of water carefully as we knew this would be the only water we would have for our day. There are lots of difference uses for this water, and not only to drink, but to clean, wash and cook with it. We made it a bit of a competition to see which group had the most water in their buckets by the end.  Click on this album to look at some of the photos from our day.

What did this exercise make you think about children living like this everyday?

WONDERS about Child Labour

Today we started looking at the difference between children at work and child labour. We watched a video about some children that were involved in child labour. We found out that over 250 million children are in danger as they work in harsh conditions in child labour. It was really sad to watch and made us realise how lucky we are.

What questions do you have as we start this topic?
What do you want to find out by the end of this topic?
What do you WONDER about child labour?

Dogs are better pets than cats

I agree because cats dont do much they just sit, eat, sleep and leave the house. But dogs on the other hand play, help are your best friend, and most of all are loyal.
By Jordy

I disgree and agree because dogs do more stuff, but some people love cats because cats are soft and cuddly.
By Matt

I disagree because they are mostly the same.
By Jade

I disagree that dosg make better pets than cats becasue some people want an easier pt to look after but on the other hand some people might want an energetic pet for their kids.
By Ella

I disagree because it depends on who you are. If you are a person who likes to go for walks, then have a dog. If you just want something that sits on your lap and purrs, then have a cat. But if I had to decide I would pick a dog because I am allergic to cats.
By Caleb.F

What is your opinion, do you think dogs make better pets than cats?

Naughty children should be punished by smacking

I disgree that you should be smacked for punishment because there is an anti smacking law in New Zealand and it is abuse. If you smack your child when you're angry, what is that, encouraging your kids to do when they are angry? That's right, smack! Family voilence is not ok and the best solution is to talk about the problem. Put yourself into the smacked persons shoes, would you like to be smacked?
By Caleb.F

I disagee that children should be puniched by smacking because what does that teach them? To hit when someone annoys them? To hit when someone annoys them? What if you loose your temper and hit too hard? Babies can be killed by being shaken. Do you want to be know as a baby murderer?
By Greer

What is your opinion, do you agree or disagree? Do you have any evidence?
