Solar Ovens

We found out that 1 in 6 people did not have access to electricity.
Then we decided to try design and build a solar oven, only using, a pizza box, tinfoil, gladwrap and tape.
After watching several clips on solar energy, we found out that we need something to reflect the heat, some thing to absorb the heat and something to trap the heat inside.

Here is our journey to design, make and test our solar ovens.

We had to try melt a marshmellow and some chocolate thins to make a smore.
See how we went..

Child Labour poems

Persuasive techniques have been the focus for our writing sessions.
After learning about child labour, we decided to use our persuasive techniques in writing a poem to either make the reader aware of the horrors of child labour, or try persuade them to help stop.

Here are some examples, let us know what you think..

I hope you could find examples of either, emotive language, repetition, rhetorical questions, facts or statistics, groups of 3 or exaggeration.

Who helps?

We have been learning about people whose rights are not been met!

All of the world, over 250 million children are forced into child labour. Working over 16 hours a day, beaten if they are not working hard enough, and all for about 45 cents a day.

Even here in New Zealand we have 1 in 4 children living in poverty. Many children that do not start their day with breakfast or have a school lunch. They do not have proper footwear or warm clothing.

So what groups help people that do not have their rights being met?
What do they do to help?
What can we do to help

Term 4 Ideas??

Before we start planning next term, we would like to know what you are curious to learn about.
Here are some of the key questions we have to cover (they are a bit teacher language not kid talk):

1.How does the survival and sustainability of living things depend on the interaction with each other?
2.How do all living things evolve and adapt to their environment?
3.What systems and processes support sustainability?

But remember the topic is SURVIVAL and SUSTAINABILITY, so if we can make it fit these concepts!!
Put an idea down, as this is your chance to have a say on what we are going to learn next term. Even some questions would be good!!

Guilt or Not??

Grandma escaping the attack from the wolf
Today we watched a short clip on the story of Little Red Riding Hood. We then got into groups, selected the characters and acted out the story. Some groups presented them to class, there was some awesome acting that left the audience in tears of laughter!!
Awesome acting action
Little Red Riding Hood Show

Now we must put the Wolf before the jury and decided if he is guilt of foul play or not!!!
What is your opinion??
What do you think??

Water simulation

Water is something we take for granted, we turn on the tap and clean water appears.
Many families around the world do not have access to clean water, and sometimes have to walk long distances to collect and carry water back, every day!!
They have much bigger containers than a bucket, and often carry it on top of their heads (like the character, Mariatu, in our class book).
It is suppose to be our right to have access to clean water, but many are not having this right being met!
We experienced what it would be like to carry water over difficult terrain.
We were competing to have the most water remaining in our buckets, check out our video to see how we did... Imagine if we had to live a life like Mariatu, collecting water daily?

Blood diamonds

A big thank you to Reon and Findlay from Room 8, who came and shared their slide show project
on a protest song about Blood Diamonds by Kanye West. We learned that this song is based on the people who are not having their rights met!! Instead they are being beaten as they work, and being paid little money to find these diamond, just so they have enough money to by food to live.
What message or facts did you find out today??

Here is the song they show us

What other songs do you know that try share a message about peoples rights not being met??

What are our rights?

We have started looking at human rights, particularly children's rights. This great video gave us a look at how our rights were formed. Do you now know some of our rights? With rights comes responsibilities too!! Do you know of any cases where peoples rights are not being met, locally? nationally? globally?

Opening ceremony

Here is our opening ceremony for the Tamanui Te Ra's winter sports challenge.
