Water is something we take for granted, we turn on the tap and clean water appears.
Many families around the world do not have access to clean water, and sometimes have to walk long distances to collect and carry water back, every day!!
They have much bigger containers than a bucket, and often carry it on top of their heads
(like the character, Mariatu, in our class book).
It is suppose to be our right to have access to clean water, but many are not having this right being met!
We experienced what it would be like to carry water over difficult terrain.
We were competing to have the most water remaining in our buckets, check out our video to see how we did...
Imagine if we had to live a life like Mariatu, collecting water daily?
We are a Year 8 class from Waimea Intermediate School, which is in Nelson, New Zealand. We hope you enjoy reading our blog.

Blood diamonds
A big thank you to Reon and Findlay from Room 8, who came and shared their slide show project
on a protest song about Blood Diamonds by Kanye West. We learned that this song is based on the people who are not having their rights met!! Instead they are being beaten as they work, and being paid little money to find these diamond, just so they have enough money to by food to live.
What message or facts did you find out today??
Here is the song they show us
What other songs do you know that try share a message about peoples rights not being met??

What are our rights?
We have started looking at human rights, particularly children's rights.
This great video gave us a look at how our rights were formed.
Do you now know some of our rights?
With rights comes responsibilities too!!
Do you know of any cases where peoples rights are not being met, locally? nationally? globally?

This term we are having a syndicate Winter Sports Challenge. Classes are put into 4 teams and have adopted a developing country. In Room 2 we have Cambodia, Bhutan, Burma and Vietnam.
Here is a look into their preparation, as they make banners and flags to represent their countries.
I can not wait to see what they look like in the opening ceremony!
