Cable Bay Walk
Last Thursday our syndicate, Tamanui te ra went on a walk over to Cable Bay. We were very lucky with the good weather, as it had been raining all week leading up to our trip. 90 of us piled into two buses and made our way to Glenduan Bay, which is where we started our walk up the steep farm land. We were happy to head into the bush for some shade, before making our way to the top. It was a fantastic view from the top, as we sat and ate our lunch, then it was time to head down the slippery slopes, luckily no one fell over! We passed some people that were their shooting goats, before we balanced our way down the grassy hill and between the cows. Finally we could see the end...Cable Bay!!! Lots of us took a dip in the water, dodging the jelly fish, while other looked in the rock pools or threw rocks. It was a fanastic day, challenging at times but lots of fun. Take a look at the pics from our day!

First Aid Day
Last Wednesday our class participated in a First Aid and Saefty course, run by the New Zealand Redcross. We learnt lots about dangers and how to keep safe and what to do if some one gets hurt. We now know how to put people in to the recovery position, how to wrap cuts and what to do if we get a burn. We had lots of fun practising these, and here are some photos from our day.
Can you remeber what DRSABS stands for???

Survival Meals
Each group had to decide on a meal they could easily cook if they had to spend the night on the track while doing the Cable Bay walk. The ingredients had to be light and easy to carry in their pack, hadto have the least amount of rubbish, be cooked on a gas cooker and give you enough energy to walk out the next day.
Snakes ingredients weighed the less.
Rhinos had the least amount of rubbish.
The Bears meal was the most realistic and easy to make during a tramp.
The Pandas meal was very nutritional and had the most ingredients.
The Snakes had the tasty meal that gave you alot of energy.
Well done to all groups for planning, cooking and eating their own meal.

Survivor Challenges
Last Friday we started the first of 6 survivor challenges that we will take part in.
Each group has created a challenged that is physical and mentally challenging.
The Bears team won the first challenge.
Students had to catch water balloons in a bucket, then run it through an obstacle course, pour the water into a milk container, untill the clue floated to the top. Then students could pull out the clue with 2 fingers, then use all the letters inside to create the secret word.
It was an exciting and fun first challenge and I can not wait for the next challenges we will do on Wednesday!
Below are some photos for the challenge, comment on what you thought about this challenge.

Athletics day
On Tuesday we had our schools athletics day. The events were shot put, discuss, long jump, high jump, 60 metres and 100 metres sprints. The 200 and 400 metre finals were also on the day; we had two class representatives, Lucy and Kirsten, who ran really well. We all tried our hardest in the events and luckily we had a great day for it. At the end of the day we had the class relays, running for our class was Brandon.M, Regan, Logan, Kyle, Kalyssa, Kirsten, Lucy and Amber. Kyle got us out to a good lead and we kept that going, Amber ended up running our class into SECOND place, well done!
Let us know if you scored any 4’s on the day, and in which event, or if you beat your previous record!
Here are some pictures Hana took, while she was helping at shotput with Miss B.

Syndicate Sports Afternoon
Last Friday we had the year 8 syndicate sports afternoon. We played the three sports, ultimate frisbee, fippa rugby and capture the flag. Everyone put lots of effort into wearing their syndicate colours; ours was yellow! It was a hot day but we all tried really hard to win the title. In the end we came out on top by just under 10 points, we were only one off have the most points possible! Sadly we only had time for two games out of the three, so we were hoping for some ideas for the next Friday where we will battle it out again. Can’t wait to hear your creative ideas! Post as a comment which sport you would like to have in the next sports afternoon.

Trainee Briar works with Kakapo birds on Codfish Island
Miss Bibby plays futsal with Briar, and heard that she was doing her ranger training on Codfish Island, an island that is a special reserve to look after the near endangered Kakapo. Fantastic because we have been lresearching information about the Kakapo!Today we read her blog story about her adventure on Codfish island. We brainstormed lots of question that we to ask her.
This is what Miss B sent her:
The kids read your story and have made some questions for you
1. Why can't the Kakapo fly? didn't it used to?
2. Are there other birds on Codfish Island, or only the Kakapo?
3. What do you think is the most interesting thing about a kakapo?
4. How often do you find a Kakapo on the island?
5. Why did you want to do this job?
6. Are the eyes of the Kakapo small because it is nocturnal?
7. What is the chances of you going to their burrow and finding an egg?
8. Do you track the Kakapo there? If you track them wear do you put the tag?
If you answered any of these they would be stoked!!! room2wis@gmail.com
or check your self out on our blog http://www.room2wis.blogspot.com/
We are looking forward to hear back from her!

A billion acts of Green
This term we are look at survival and sustainability. We looked at this webiste below and have decided to support this cause, so we are thinking of ways we can pledge ways to help going green.
A Billion Acts of Green®
Earth Day Network has chosen A Billion Acts of Green® as the theme for Earth Day 2011. At over 40 million actions to date, A Billion Acts of Green®–the largest environmental service campaign in the world–inspires and rewards simple individual acts and larger organizational initiatives that further the goal of measurably reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainability. The goal is to register one billion actions in advance of the global Earth Summit in Rio in 2012. www.earthday.org
Lets brainstorm ways that we can help, so far we have thought of buying local products and taking recycable bags to the supermarket.

Two Awesome Rugby World Cup Recounts
Rugby World Cup Final Recount
At 8:15pm on Sunday night hundreds of thousands of peopled pushed and shoved to get through the gates of Eden Park to watch the Rugby World Cup Final between the French and the mighty All Blacks. The fans sat excitedly in their seats as they waited for the whistle to blow, marking the start of what was to become a thrilling match of rugby.
The two teams took their places on the field and the All Blacks formed a group to perform the Haka. The crowd is silent as Piri Wepu lead the Haka. The French team held hands as they walked steadily forward. The Haka finished and the teams took their places on the field once again, ready for the kick off whistle.
The crowd started to count down. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. The referee, Craig Jubert blew his whistle and Aaron Cruden of the All Blacks kicked the ball high into the air.
Fourteen minutes into the game and the All Blacks had a line out throw. Kevan Mealamu threw the ball in and Brad Thorn was lifted high above the rest of the players. He knocked the ball down into the waiting arms of Tony Woodcock, who then bursts through a gap in France’s defensive line and dives over the try line. The crowd erupts like a volcano. The All Black fans cheered, clapped and waved their flags in delight. Piri Wepu placed the ball precisely on his kicking tee and takes his stance ready to take the conversion. Whack. Wepu struck the ball and it sailed off towards the posts but drifted off to the side. All Blacks-5, France-0.
The All Blacks had the ball and it got passed to the Fly Half Aaron Cruden. He stepped and ran at the French line. Suddenly Cruden stepped as his knee buckled. He went down in a hard tackle to one of the French players. Whilst Cruden was lying on the field the team medics rush to his aid. Aaron Cruden had seriously injured his knee and was now out of the Rugby World Cup Final. He limps off the field with the assistance of the medics. Crudens replacement, Stephen Donald ran onto the field to clapping and cheering from the crowd. Not long afterwards Craig Juberts whistle went again to signify half time.
The two teams ran out of their changing rooms and onto the field ready to start the second half. Craig Jubert cheeked his watch for the time, blew his whistle and the second half commenced.
Five minutes into the half the All Blacks got a penalty kick directly out in front of the posts. Stephen Donald stepped up to take the kick as Piri Wepu had missed a few prior penalties. Donald kicked the ball, and it flew straight over between the posts. The crowd went wild! He turned and ran back to his team mates with a smile spread across his face. All Blacks-8, France-0.
The restart was made and France were in possession of the ball. They spread it wide and then cut through a gap on the inside. The ball was off loaded to the French Captain, Theirry Dusautoir who strode through New Zealand’s defensive and scored next to the posts. The fans supporting France went crazy. Dimitri Yach Villi lined up to take the kick. He slotted the ball straight down the middle of the posts. All Blacks-8, France-7.
The game had just two minutes to go and it was right down to the wire. Fans of both teams were not sure what the outcome would be. New Zealand have the ball and it’s given to the Captain, Richie McCaw who drove into the French with the force of the props and forwards behind him. He went down and the ball was given to Kieran Read who did the same. The siren for full time sounded and Andrew Ellis did the honors of kicking the ball into touch. New Zealand had won the Rugby World Cup Final! There was excitement and disappointment from both the players and the fans.
The final score. New Zealand-8, France-7.
The French players received their silver medals and then the All Black team received their gold medals. Richie McCaw walked up to get the William Web Ellis Cup which was given out by Jock Hobbs and John Key. He shook their hands and lifted it high into the air for everybody to see. The crowd roared like thousands of hungry lions. Smiles were on everyone’s faces except for the French. The All Blacks celebrated by spraying Champaign and performing one last Haka for the audience.

The Rugby World Cup Final!
“God defend New Zealand” the final words of our national anthem rang out through the stadium. The crowd was going wild; they knew what was going to happen next. The All Blacks were in formation to perform the well known war dance. The Haka was amazing, loud with great strong movements. It was enough to send a chill running down your spine.
I sat there snuggled up on the couch as the shrill noise of the whistle sounded. The ball was kicked strongly, sending it in a powerful ark down the pitch. I was nervous and excited all at once. I hoped the All Blacks would have a victory against France but there was still a chance that France would play really well and beat our team, the All Blacks. If The All Blacks played as well as they did against the Wallabies I was sure we would win, especially with all the support being on home ground!
To start with not much happened. The All Blacks had the ball for a bit then France had the ball for a bit. It wasn’t until around the 13th or 14th minute where things got exciting. The French got a line out inside their 22 line; only about 15 metres away from the All Blacks try line! The line happened and then all of a sudden the T.V screen showed Woodcock sprinting with the ball towards the try line none of the French team were between him and the try line it was almost a certain try! I was so excited and so was the crowd! They were standing up cheering and screaming and Woodcock was getting closer and closer to the line 5 metres, 4 metres, 3 metres and a few seconds later he was touching the ball down over the try line! “Go Woodstock!” I yelled. The atmosphere was victorious even though the game had only progressed 15 minutes.
Then I was glued to the screen along with many other people all over the world. The penalty was lined up and the ball was kicked, sadly the aiming was a bit off so New Zealand had to settle for 5 points instead of 7.
After the second kick off not much happened France got close to their try line and New Zealand got close to theirs. It wasn’t until Cruden made a break that there was a bit of action. Cruden was sprinting to the line with only a few of Frances defenders in his way. He side step past one and was now well inside the 22 line. He went to side step the next one when thud! He was on the ground grasping his knee, his face a picture of pain and agony. The medics rushed onto the field and leant over looking worried. But then something surprising happened Cruden looked like he was going to keep on going. I thought there was no way Cruden could keep on playing after watching the brutal replays, the knee crunching and the crash in to the ground. Cruden stood up but his knee collapsed underneath him. He was lead limping of the field.
Suddenly a wave of sleepiness washed over me I fought to stay awake but couldn’t. No I must watch it but, no I was already asleep. Next thing I knew I was awake with the sun pouring in through the edges of my blinds. I got out of bed and groggily walked down to lounge. Who won? I asked. “The All Blacks, by one point!” Said Mum “yes” I said “we are champions for the second time!”

Room 2's Child Labour display in Richmond Mall
Today Room 2 went to the Richmond Mall to raise awareness about Child Labour and raise money for the Free the Children Fund, by selling wallets made from juice box wallets.
They did a fantastic job talking to all the people and motivating them to make a donation or buy a wallet.
We raised over $300 and still have about 20 wallets to sell at school tomorrow. Next term we will be donating the money online.
I have been so impressed with everyones hard work, and the empathy you have shown throughout this unit, you should all be very proud of yourselves, as I am!!
Here is a short video of some photos from the mall, let me know what you thought of this experience.

Miss Bibby went fishing with the Italian Rugby Team
Miss Bibby was lucky enough to take 5 of the Italian Rugby players out fishing on her Step Dad's boat. She had a fantastic time and said that the players were really down to earth, and nice guys, who spoke good english. They didn't catch any fish, but enjoyed their day out on the boat, with a barbeque after.
Do you recognise any of the players? Post a comment of who you think they are. Hint:one of the players had his player profile in the Nelson Mail on the weekend!

Raising money to STOP Child Labour
Room 2 students creating wallets from juice boxes. Miss Bibby showed Room 2 a wallet that she brought in Chile, that was made by children. Room 2 had an idea to make these wallets, which would be a memory of child labour and sell them to raise awareness to STOP child labour. The money Room 2 will raise will be donated to a chosen organisation that makes a difference. This week we will be researching which organisation will make the biggest difference with our money. Please continue to bring in juice boxes to Room 2, the more juice boxes we get, the more wallets we can make, which mean more money we have to give, to help STOP child labour. |

Lucy, Emily and Brie reporting on Netball
Here is Lucy, Emily and Brie on their winning day!! |
NETBALL FINALS
Brie, Emily and Lucy are in the year 8C green netball team and managed to make it to the finals. We played N.C.A; both teams were determined to win so it was a tricky and physical game. We were losing in the first quarter but managed to come back in the last few though it was still very close. We won 32-27 in the end and were so happy and relieved. We won two trophies one for winning our grade and one for getting the least overall goals scored against us out of 180 teams in the whole season! By Brie, Emily and Lucy.

Richmond Hill Walk
Last Friday, Tamanui Te Ra syndicate, went on a walk up the Richmond Hill. It was hard, but we were very determined to reach the top. Eventually we made the top and we all had a snack to munch on. It was really cool, and it was very tiring.

Regan "Its had to substitue quantity for quality"
Mardi "It was tough doing it for 10 minutes, imagine doing this for the whole day"
Amber "It was hard to not make a sound when doing it."
Anna "They don't make alot of money for the long hours they work."

Water Water Water
Yesterday we did a bucket relay to experience what it would be like to have to collect and carry a bucket of water, just to have enough water for your family for one day. We realise there are alot of people around the world that have to do this to get their water
After doing this simulation, this was some responses from people in our class.
Maddy: " we realised it was tiring and your arms hurt carrying the buckets"
Anna: " We got a bit wet doing it. A bucket isn't alot for a whole days use."
Alicia: ' It was hard to balance the water, so that it didn't spill"
Sam:"They must work really hard to get something that we just get given."
Check out this slideshow about this activity, and tell us what you think it would be like!

Kirsten wins at Ecofest
I entered a wearable arts competition with some friends Shikylah and Emma. We created a black and white zip dress, which we got our idea from Smiggle pencil cases. We recycled the zips from 6 sleeping bags and sewed them together onto our dress, this took us 7 weeks in total to make. Last Saturday we took the dress to Trafalgar Square to model it at Ecofest. We won a trophy for the people's choice award in funky fashion, out of 48 other entries. We are very proud of our work and wish to enter again next year. By Kirsten.

Winter Sports Tournament
Over half the class participated in the annual winter sports tournament, held at Saxton Stadium on Thursday and Friday last week. The students have written their results to share with us.
Girls Soccer by Lucy
The girls soccer team this year were determined and ready to win! On the first day we won two and drew two games. The second day was more intense as we had to win our games to get into the final, and we did luckily. In the final we played our close rivals Nelson Intermediate. It was a tight game and once again it came down to penalty shootouts. Eve, our goalie only let in one goal and our team scored every time. We had a wonderful victory.
Boys Soccer by Regan and Logan
On Thursday the boys played 4 games, the first game was against Bohally and we lost 2-0. The second game was against Nelson Prep but again we lost 2-0. The next game was played against Buller and we won 6-0. The last game on Thursday was against Broadgreen and we won 3-1. On Friday we played against St. Josephs and we won 12-0. We then played our last game against Golden Bay and won 3-0. Overall we placed fourth and we all had a really good time.
Girls Hockey by Anna
The girls hockey team played really well winning their first game 5-0 against St Pauls, then they drew the next 2 games against Nelson and Broadgreen Intermediates. For the last game against Bohally, everybody was really tired and we lost 2-0. We ended up coming 4th out of 5 teams. It was a really fun 2 days of tournament.
Boys Hockey by Kyle
In the boys hockey we won the tournament. In our first game we won 4 nil against St Pauls and then we won our second game 6 nil against Broadgreen. The next day we played Nelson and won 6 nil. Our last game was the hardest against Bohally, which we won 2 nil.
Netball by Amber and Kalyssa
Last Thursday and Friday Kalyssa and I played netball for winter tournament. Our first game we won 35-0 and the second was 42-6 to us, and the third was 26-10, we had won again. The fourth game we also won 23-11, which was our last game on Thursday. Then on Friday we won 18-12 and our second game was 19-18. We played the final against Bohally and lost 30-17, so we came second overall.
Open weight Rugby by Sam, Luke and Cameron
On Thursday we played in the winter tournament for open weight rugby. In our first game we had a draw against Bohally, then smashed Broadgreen in the final. On Friday we split in to two teams, to play 7 a-side rugby. One team came 8th and the other came 3rd. We all played well and no one got badly hurt.

SNOW SNOW SNOW
Can you believe it actually snow today?
Room 2 noticed the small, white flakes floating down, and ran outside to get a better look.
Did it snow where you were? What did you think of the snow?

Trying something new.
Today Room 2 tried using google documents to share their ideas about the positive and negative aspects of puberty. They said they really enjoyed sharing their ideas this way, as they didn't feel embarassed, they could see others ideas as they worked. Cool idea, next week we will give it a go after school. Another great way to share and build on our thinking. See how it looked...

Instructions as Poems
Over the last few weeks we have been looking at how to write instructions, then write them in a more entertaining, interesting way in a poem form.
Check out the results...

Kirsten instructions on How to make toast
Open the cupboard to find the snow white toaster.
Lift it up like it is a big tonne of rocks,
then go to the dark cupboard,
search around for the bread, like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Plop the bread in the toaster like you are dropping a rock in the river. Wait til the snow white toaster pops your yummy toast out,
get the yummy toast out and get a plate out,
spread the nice golden butter on the toast,
gently put the yummy jam on,
cut the toast in half and enjoy.
Maddy's instructions on How to saddle your horse
Pick up the saddle, be careful it is heavy.
Chase your horse around the paddock, its good exercise for him and you.
Catch and tie it tight to a well stuck post,
pick a bristly brush and scrub the dirt off its coat,
Feel for a fluffy blanket,
place it evenly on its back,
finally pick up the heavy saddle,
put it on its back,
tighten the strap around his ginormous belly.
Now you are ready to go like the wind.
Mardi's instructions for how to take a goal kick.
Place the ball, like a fragile egg, on the corner of the six yard box,
tiptoe back a metre or two,
glare at the person you are going to pelt it to,
Sprint up to the ball like a cheetah,
strike the bottom of the ball,
like a bull throwing a man in the air with his horns,
smack the ball to the player,
if he is in trouble
run up
and help him
as if he was about to die.
