Maori Language week
On Thursday Room 10 went over to First Years Preschool to present our Te Reo maori books that we had prepared in the previous weeks. The books had colours, animals and numbers all in Te Reo. The kids really enjoyed the books and it was a good way to celebrate Maori Language Week as a community.

On Thursday Room ten visited First Years Preschool. We had been planning this for a few weeks, but decided to go during this week as it was rather special, it was Maori Langauge Week. During class time, we had been making Te Reo booklets as part of our Te Reo learning. We also learnt 3 songs and shared them too. It was a great trip and it was also awesome to see the faces of the kids light up when we showed them our booklets.

This weeks poem was about spring personified. Personification is when something is given human like qualities. The students wrote their own poems, focusing on using active verbs and personification. We tried presenting them on ADDTEXT, a new site we are learning to use, so here are some examples...

Rights songs DANCE
We turned our rights songs into dances. The students had to add different elements of dance and movement to try and share a message or story of what they think the message to the listener is.
Here are two examples of what we have seen so far...

Max, Sam, Liam, Johny, Josh
Rights Song presentation
Students have been looking at how singers can share their opinions and messages through their song lyrics. They identified the rights they sung about, and persuasive language features used to add impact to their lyrics, and the message they wanted the listener to get.

Winter Tournament Update
Many of our students participated in the annual Winter Tournament last Thursday and Friday.
Here are some of the sports reviews from our class...
Hi I'm Seth and I participated in the hockey at winter tournament.
I think it went really well even though we did not win. The opposition were really hard and good hockey players. We were polite, happy, enthusiastic and good sports.
We came 6th out of 7 teams. We had a lot of fun a big thanks to Mrs. Parker for organizing it.
I'm Sam, the vice captain of the Winter Tournament Football Team.
We had a really strong team this year and smashed the competition, winning
every game by at least 4 goals (including the final!) We were over the moon
after winning the tournament, it was a shame the first day was rained off, but
we managed to play 4 games in on Friday. I’d like to thank Ms. Bibby for
coaching us and helping us be able to work together as a team. Also I’d
like to thank Mr. White and the girls football team for letting us train
against you. It was the first time in 10 years Waimea had won the tournament
and it won’t be our last.
The Waimea Intermediate 8A netball team played extremely well, but sadly losing to B.I.S, just 1 point in the grade 2 finals. The winter tournament was a great experience for all of our netball team because we had a lot of fun. On the first day 2 of our 5 games got called off because it was raining but the rest of the day went on . The Waimea 8As did amazing in the tournament and I know our coach is very proud . By: Lilly Zwart
It was Thursday morning, the first day of Winter Tournament, and the rain bucketed down and thrashed against the window of the art room, where all of the football girls were meeting with Mr White. The fields were very muddy and wet so we couldn't start our Winter Tournament in this weather. Mr Brunning had finally agreed for us to use the school fields, so we ended up playing two friendly games against the Bohally girls football team. The next day it was time for competition and we all hopped on the bus after we'd done the roll so we could go to Nelson Intermediate to play football. We meet our coach Matt at the playing fields and we had a bye for the first game, so we had time to eat, warm up and talk about the game ahead. We won our first game 2-0 in the last two minutes against Broadgreen and we went straight to the final. The final was intense against Bohally and the first half they were up 1-0, but we regained our strength and got the score up and when the final whistle blew the score was one all and we went straight to the penalty goals. It was best of five shots and it was Bohally's turn first. We only managed to get one out of the five goals and Bohally got four so we lost our five year winning streak. I think that our team worked really well together and at the end of the day I think that we had fun and we tried our best and that's what matters.

The Waimea
Intermediate girl’s winter tournament basketball team participated in the top
of the south Intermediate Winter Tournament alongside Nelson Prep, Nelson
Intermediate, Baholly, Brodgreen and Renwick. Day one, our basketball team had
four games winning them all by over 20 points, the whole team was overwhelmed
with excitement after that day and we couldn’t wait for day 2. Day 2 was also a
long day with another 4 games but we won our games by more than 20 points again
and entering the final with another strong lead and winning the trophy for
2017.

Science
We have been learning about how to follow a scientific procedure. Room 10 have been working in the Science Lab, exploding lunch bags and burning tea bags. Sounds like fun, but check out the pictures to see their learning...
Ma is white
In Te Reo, we have been learning the names of colours. Now we have mastered our numbers and colours, we are planning to make some picture books for the preschool to help them learn them aswell. Mateo loves these songs and is learning them at home too, so thank you Room 10!
Check out their latest song here...
Reading - Inferencing
Last week for reading we were learning about how to infer. We were shown parts of a machine and we had to make inferences about what they might be used for and how this worked. In the end Lilly shared with us she has this object at home, that peels apples. She brought it to school to show us how it worked. It made a lot more sense seeing it in action!
Thanks Lilly

Te Reo challenge
Here is a video of Room 10's latest challenge. They have been learning to count in Te Reo Maori. They took on the challenge to combine hand actions, counting forwards and backward in Te Reo Maori. I think they were amazing, and I was impressed at how quickly they learned this and how fast they were. Special mention to Olivia and Brooke, whom Jonty said "were the most practised, fastest and accurate!" Check it out...
Ken shares his learning
Ken is interested in becoming a chef. He has been reading about supermarkets and baking cakes. This week Ken went to the supermarket to recreate his book, and buy ingredients to make brownies. Zack photographed Ken's trip to the supermarket and Jesse helped give Ken instructions and bake Miss B's favourite recipe, chocolate brownies. Here are a few pics of their journey...
A big thank you to Trina for all your help, and everyone in Room 10 loved eating the brownies!!

Guess the job?
1. You come home smelling like yeast, and start working early in the morning.
2. Your uniform can save your life. Watch out you may get wet.
3. You need to have your full drivers license for this job. Every day can be different, but beware, it could get dangerous.
4. Not many people like coming to see you, but they should do about every 6 months.
Guess all the jobs correctly, don't forget to write your name down to win the points.

Getting feedback from Greta the artist |
Interview with Greta the Artist
Greta giving Room 10 feedback on their art work |
On the first of June, Greta Greenwood (Clays’mum) came to talk to our class about
her part time me job as an artist.
Typical days for Grate are normally working towards
exhibitions, but every year Grata only goes to one. So on days she is free, she
paints abstract pictures or gathers ideas. Greta’s other part time job is a
teacher at Appleby Primary School, and she spends majority of her time teaching.
Grate has always loved art but doesn’t like how she has to
out herself out there if she wants to sell her art, and also doesn’t like how
she is always selling herself to sell her artwork.
People who suit this job are people who love art and are
talented enough to draw something that someone knows what it is. Skills for
this job are just to start drawing with confidence and to not get scared. Greta
learned these skills by creating at our age, she also chose art subjects at
college.
Greta needed a visual arts degree if she wanted to be a full
time artist, but Greta did need an IT degree for this job. School subjects that
are useful are art, photograph, painting and sculpting. Visiting galleries and
viewing artwork, going to exhibitions are all great activities to see what you
like.
It is hard to make a living out of this job but is easy to
use it in different ways, like teaching.

Interview with Gavin
Gavin Martin |
He dislikes getting dirty but loves knowing that he has built
a car out of pieces for someone to drive. Maths, technical drawing, design and
reading are subjects and skills that help in the job. The job suits someone who
loves cars. Gavin learnt the skills from his father and was also partly self
taught, but these days you need to have qualifications in maths and welding from
Polytec.
He said the job is harder to get in to because it is a dying
art and you also need an eye for detail and be good with your hands. Gavin also
told us that one of his cars has won over 35 national titles.

Chris Roberts Police Detective
On Monday afternoon, Chris Roberts came in to talk about his interesting job as a detective in the Organised Crime Unit. Chris told us that there was never a day like another. One day he would be at the computer, doing paperwork and taking evidence to court, the next you might be investigating a grusome crime scene.
To get into this job, you have to be a calm, open minded, hardworking and a little bit nosy.
It also helps if you are good at P.E, Maths and English.
To become a Police Officer Chris had to have a NZ Drivers license, be fit and a citizen of NZ or Australia, and spend 2 years at the Royal NZ Police college in Porirua.
With the pay of 40-50k, for your first year constantly rising, it is a job to look forward to.
